Paper Abstract:
|
Although Web 2.0 tools are important in education at all levels, they are especially important for prospective teachers of
English. Especially in locales where English language is not the mother tongue, prospective teachers have little chance to
make use of their language in natural-social ways. The present study aims to examine the habits of prospective English
teachers in regard to the awareness of blogs, wikis, and podcasts. The participants were 162 prospective English language
teachers studying in 2007-2008 spring semester (121 females and 41 males). In the analysis of the data, frequencies and
percentages were used to show a descriptive analysis of the results. For the duration (length) of usage, arithmetic means
were calculated. The results of this study indicate that podcasts are the least popular tools used by the prospective English
language teachers in contrast to wikis being the most popular. Majority of the students learned about blogs, wikis, and
podcasts by themselves followed by learning from their friends. According to the results, blogs are used for 27 months,
wikis for 32 months, and podcasts for 15 months. These results suggest that Web 2.0 tools are not popular in prospective
English language teachers daily lives. |
